The AA Handbook

To any AA members.

Do you remember years ago if you were an AA member they would send customers a handbook which was a very useful guide.

It would have full listings of motorways and City Maps.

I am still an AA member and found that I dont receive this handbook any more.

Does anyone know if AA have stopped publishing this. I went onto the AA site and there were referecnes to a handbook but the link doesnt exist anymore.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

  • Yes, you're correct, the AA used to provide a handbook every year for members. It contained U.K road and city maps along with AA approved hotels and garages by town/city. Also lots of car/motoring related advice and information.
As far as I'm aware they only provide this http://www.theaa.com/breakdowncover/handbook.html now.
I've recently renewed and that's all I received and it's just a thin paperback booklet.
My only reason for renewing with AA is because there is a 75% discount through Vauxhall for 2nd year once the initial Vauxhall Assistance expires. (Roadside and Relay for £25)
I will be going elsewhere next year because I once vowed never to join the AA again. Money got the better of that vow on this occasion!

Hi there. I work for the AA and I have read your post in regard to the AA handbook. In days gone by we produced a comprehensive handbook for all AA members and this was issued on a regular basis. Things have now changed, mainly due to the technology which is freely available and the way this has affected the requirements of our members, the current handbook no longer contains the extensive range of maps and hotel details because this information is so readily available elsewhere. In the main, the handbook is now a guide for new members in respect of their motoring needs. If you would like further details about the services the AA has to offer, I invite you to visit the AA’s website at www.theaa.com.

The RAC also used to issue an annual members handbook, twice as thick as AA one. BUT members had to purchase it and it was available to non members for a higher price.

And I think my dad still has some teleprinted concertina pages which were the AA route plans which you could ask for (or purchase) and then collect from your local AA office for our annual holiday! I still use parts of those routes on the long journeys for nostalga - following roads marked "HR".
