I still want to know why he was so desperate for information on torture and rendition not to be released. That was Milliband, right?
My guess would be that they did what they were told by the US, were compicit in it, and lied to Parliament about it on a number of occasions.

Of course he lied. I saw him on C4 - telling a bare faced lie: categorically denying Britain had been complicit in torture.

    They are all scum.

    All of them.

I don't think there is anyone in the Labour party who is financially/ economically literate.

    Nor in the Tory Party

My life! The Independent seems to suggest that Ed Balls would be front runner to challenge Hellperson Harmen:

    Could it get any worse??

David Milliband? He's just as bad - the contempt and arrogance with which he speaks is truly astonishing.

I totally agree. It's amazing that a bunch of incompetents are running the country, [strike]spending[/strike] wasting our money and offering only partial truths when questioned.

However - the one politician who does appear to stand out as being economically literate is Vince Cable. It helps that he studied Natural Science and Economics at University.

Now, I'm not a particular fan of the Liberal Democrats, but this fella does appear to have a good understanding of economics and in particular, is generally cited as the first politician to predict the current crisis.

My favourite quote was Mr Cable describing Gordon Brown's "remarkable transformation in the last few weeks from Stalin to Mr Bean, creating chaos out of order rather than order out of chaos”.

In 2003 Mr Cable posed a question to Gordon Brown, then Chancellor, during Treasury Questions: “The growth of the British economy is sustained by consumer spending pinned against record levels of personal debt, which is secured, if at all, against house prices that the Bank of England describes as well above equilibrium level. What action will the Chancellor take on the problem of consumer debt?”. Flash Gordon didn't answer how he would solve the problem, simply replying: “In the past,we've been right and you've been wrong.”

I don't really need to add anything more about Brown, Smith or Milliband that anybody else hasn't already said. They're a sham, the lot of them.

    (roll forward 40 years)

Granddaughter to Jacqui Smith: "So what did you do when you were younger Grandma?"

Jacqui Smith: "I helped Gordon waste billions of pounds of taxpayer's money, then I claimed tens of thousands of pounds of taxpayer's money and gave it to my Sister"

    Granddaughter: "Oh!"

I think we should definately stick with Brown.

    1. He's doing some nice damage to the labour party.

    !

So there we have it, doesn't care what happens to the economy as long as the Tories are elected :D
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

I'd pick Frank Field. He seems an unusually honest and straight-talking politician who commands a good deal of respect across party lines. He was given a Ministerial post at the start of the Blair government but his attempts to reform social security were (according to the accounts I read at the time) effectively blocked by Brown.

Ideally, I'd like a government comprising both Frank Field and Vince Cable.

As a previous poster said, Cable has spoken a lot of sense during this crisis. As a former Chief Economist at Shell, he has a far greater knowledge of Economics than most MPs. He also seems less concerned with party political point scoring than his Tory equivalent, George Osborne.

Personally, I think the Tories made a smart move in bringing Ken Clarke out of retirement. I think he would have made a far more effective shadow chancellor than Osborne.
