If you have not contacted the creditors, or made any payments in the last 6 years, the debts will be statute barred, and the creditors won't be able to recover the debts.

Do a search on the 'Limitation Act', lots of info on MSE, and other forums.

It's worth the £2 fee to check your credit file before you open a bank account, as you may find your credit will no longer be adverse, as the Credit Reference Agencies only hold information for six years as well, in the event of CCJ's and Defaults, satisfied, or unsatisfied.

The only exceptions are Mortgage debts, and Bankrupcy ;)
  • when you open a new bank account, are your details automatically open to credit agencys?

I thought that basic bank accounts are not credit checked but I could be wrong. As Gazzy says, might be worth the £2.00 to check your credit files.

You are correct that those accounts are not credit checked. However, I believe they use the credit reference agency to do ID/address/voters roll check though.
