I do not think there are free maps available.
You could as you say buy V3 and use the map guarantee that comes with Tom Tom's
Have you looked at Halfords Online - They do a collect and reserve service. Their online Prices are cheaper than the shop.0 -

True, though my local Halfords was willing to price match their own online price when I bought a Garmin there.
As stated in the last post, buying an older version shouldn't mean that your software or map versions are out of date, but be aware that prior to V4 (IIRC) you won't get the neat fold-in mount, and also that ~some~ versions of some models don't have an SD card slot, so you may need to watch out for that if you want one.0 -

In true moneysavingexpert style you could use a Navigo http://www.ebuyer.com/search?q=navigo&x=40&y=9
Rumor has it that this can run tomtom maps available for free online.Every day when I wake up I thank the Lord I'm WELSH. .0 -
The difference between v4 and v3 is only one of styling and the mount system (it's rather neat on the v4). You can update the maps for free (once) on either system if they're out of date.
So, it's basically down to the mount system. I've experienced the v4 one which was good (it folds into the body of the unit) until someone nicked it from my car . Hence my searching on here and coming across this message...0
