Fit for Purpose

I bought a hose connector for the modern taps in my house. It doesn't work so is not fit for purpose. Its not inherently faulty. The retailer is refusing to give me a refund because I have opened the packet it came in.
I couldn't have known it wouldn't work without opening the packet. The receipt and no paperwork he could show me stated that there was a no returns policy.
In this situation who is right and can anyone point me to the correct trading standard or rule of law. I am willing to accept that I may have bought a perfect good through my own naivety. I am unwilling to stand down on principal because the item is £11 the retailer thinks I won't go any further with my endeavours

Hi timmo81,
Does the connector not work or does it just not fit your tap?
They don't have to accept a return if the tap was bought in your error, only if they have advised you that the connector would fit your tap."A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing." George Bernard Shaw:p0 -

I'm sure it works however not with the taps in my house. My taps seem to be too bendy for the connector. My partner reckons I might find better goodwill going directly to the manufacturer in terms of coupons etc. So may just do that.
Its a difficult one because obviously it is fit for purpose just not in my case. When I bought it I looked at the pictures on the back and with my rudimentary plumbing knowledge assumed it would work.0 -

It is very unlikely the manufacturer will do anything as the contract is between you and the retailer. The majority of shops will refund you with vouchers.0 -

If the item isn't faulty and you've made a mistake in buying the wrong one then it's down to you. The only recourse you have is to rely on the goodwill of the retailer but he doesn't appear to want to help.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with everyone else, if the item isn't faulty, its just the wrong one, then you aren't legally entitled to a refund...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I too agree with everyone else. Just adding a further thought as it may help.
The retailer will have difficulty reselling the item at full price due to having already been opened, so their decision is more based on their potential losses. You on the other hand are down £11. Why not ask the shop if they are willing to refund a fraction of the purchase price?0 -
All this aggro for eleven quid??!!
I just tapped in (see what I did there??) tap connector on ebay and amongst the thousands of results, I cannot see anything costing more than a fiver (£3 for this one)0 -

Whether it is £11, £111 or £1111 is besides the point. The op was asking his rights regarding refund.
I have been known to foam at the mouth over a £1 if I know I am in the right.
PS.
OP - You're stuffed.
You bought the wrong one so basically you are changing your mind, so they do not have to refund.0
