We have two Wharfedale 80GB DVD HDD Recorder DVDRHD400 's.
One stopped working altogether, the other won't record any sound. We can play dvd's and things already recorded onto the hard drive but can't input any sound so basically it is now dvd player!
It may be a daft question as I am not technically minded but..... can the hard drive be taken out of the player and used in a pc in some way?

Yes, they should just be standard hard disks. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to find out what size (almost certainly 3.5 inch) and what type of connector they use (probably the wide, multi-pin IDE type, but might be the much smaller SATA type) and then buy a suitable external USB caddy to put one of them in.
Alternatively, a typical desktop PC will have spare power and data cables already in place to connect a second HDD, but again you need to be sure that the connector types match.
I'd be wary of the one that won't work at all - it may be that way because the HDD is dead!0
