EON High Bill

I moved into my new build in Feb 08, i was told that EON was my gas and electricity supplier and that they would subsequently contact me. I received an electricity bill in April 08 with no mention of gas so i contacted them to query this. I was told that they were not my gas supplier and i would have to contact the builder to find out who was. I did this and was told it definitely was EON and to contact the company who laid the pipes. I did this and again was told it should be EON. I contacted them again and explained everything and managed to get some sense from someone who asked for the meter number and other details, when checking this i was told that my meter was registered to another address and that this would be sorted. A couple of months passed and i received bills in June 08 and July 08 again with no mention of gas. I contacted EON again and was given a gentlemans name and number and was told he would contact me as he dealt with issues of this nature. A couple of weeks passed without contact and so i tried to contact him eventually succeeding after a few attempts, i was told this would be changed and i would receive a bill for gas within 2 weeks. two weeks passed and no bill and so i contacted him again feeling very frustrated and quite angry to be honest as i was having to do all of the leg work. Again i was promised this would be sorted and asked for a current reading. i also contacted EON to increase my dd as i expexted quite a large bill and was told i could not do this but i would not be expected to pay the bill straight away.
Then today i received a letter stating 'Notice of High Bill' and requesting a meter reading which i gave and was told that the last meter reading was lower than the one previous and so they assumed i had gone 'round the meter'????? i then was told the reading i gave would be used as the meter reader must have been inaccurate. I asked how much the new bill would be for and was told £439 for charges Feb 08 to date.
I understand i will have to pay this and was told that my dd would just be increased, but can they really get away with not billing me for over a year when i have constantly told them there was a problem?
Any advice?

400 quid for a years gas supply sounds entirely reasonable. I bet many here have or will be receiving bills for at least that amount for just the last quarter.
Unfortunately you'll have to pay it. Companies are allowed to backbill for 12 months.
Contact the supplier who may agree to a repayment plan to allow you some time to repay the amount owed."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Hi josajojosa
Sorry you have been having such a bad time. Sounds like a crossed meter issue. These sometimes happen on new builds and can take a time to sort out.
What happens is the wrong meter numbers are given to us for the individual plots. You have done exactly the right thing by contacting us and providing your details.
Unfortunately, not everyone does the same. This means we have to liaise with all the other residents and the builders to sort out which meter is attached to each address.
Once this is done the national databases are updated so everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet.
The bill you have just received should now contain the same serial number as that on your meter.
We are allowed to back bill for 12 months. However, in these cases we are always willing to set up a payment arrangement to spread the balance over the same period of time it took to fix this.
Give us a call if you would like to do this.
Hope this goes some way to explaining what happened to your gas bill.
