Anyone else had same problem with Lloyds TSB ?

My elderly mother saved a bit when she could over many years for my son. Unfortunately the book went missing not sure if lost.

We wrote to bank explaning situation expecting they could issue new book, received reply saying no trace any account, but if we supplied more details they would look again.

Sent them all details they would need, names/addresses/date opened/branch details etc. After just a few working days received another reply saying
after extensive (??) searching no trace of any account, and implying that my mother was in the wrong as any account with more than £25 would always be traceable on their systems.

As you can imagine mother very upset at thought of loosing all the money.

By sheer good fortune, after we ripped house apaart (not for first time) book was found. So as a test sent son into bank, paid in nominal amount using deposit book, which they accepted and even credited him the interest over period book missing.

So IMO either LLoyds TSB administration is totally in a mess, or could it be they deliberately set out to keep peoples deposits when pay in book is lost ?

I would hate to think other people have lost out in similar situation

Is this common, who do I complain to. ? any Lloyds TSB employee who uses forum offer explanation ?

Wow, this and your username - such amazing paranoia. It is, you know, entirely possible that they just could not find her - they have millions of customer records, and if she moved house, opened the account a long time ago, etc. information may have been missing that would have made it impossible to locate her.

Banks don't get to keep "forgotten" deposits. They become dormant accounts, and can be reclaimed through the British Bankers' Association. Lloyds haven't tried to rip her off, they just could not find her with the detail given.

Thanks yr reply Barclaysmanager - she never moved house. The letters we received were after applying through the BBA and completing the dormant/lost bank account form. Just out of interest if we hadnt found book would that be end of matter or is there anything else we could have done as the Llloyds TSB letter was quite dismissive, it didnt offer any options other than this is end of matter
