Equifax - length of life of entries?

in Credit cards
On my report, I have a number of entries for Credit cards going back as far as 2001. Although these are showing as closed (and, therefore, are strictly accurate) this information could be misleading if read very quickly. I am meticulous in closing down cards when they are no longer needed, but after 3 years of stoozing an awful lot are still showing and it would make my report seem "neater" by having very old cards removed.
Basically, I'm asking for information about how long it takes for a properly closed card to disappear off the file.
