'No Trace' on Nationwide CC?!

Options
Got my nationwide cc a few weeks ago, even made one purchase on it (for about 400 quid, abroad!)
Now im trying to register with Internet banking, it said unable to verify address. Spoke to Nationwide, and they said there is a 'No Trace' on the account! Well, what does that mean?
"It means you have to take some ID into a Nationwide branch to confirm my identity. "
But Why? If you wanted to verify my identity, you should really do it before sending me out the card and letting me use it?
"We can verify your address via the Electoral Roll sir, but not your identity."
Eh? My name is on the Electoral Roll as well, there with my address
"Yes but your photograph isnt sir"
Eh?!!!!!!
"Identity theft is an ever growing problem, sir"
Rrrrrrrrrrright, so if I dont go into a branch with my identity, you'll let me use the card as normal anyway, send me statements as normal, but I just wont be able to use Internet Banking with it.
"Thats right, sir. It only takes seconds to do it in the branch sir"
It may only take seconds in the branch but it take half a day off work to get into town, find a place to park and sort it out!
"Sorry sir thats the only way to lift the NO TRACE"

Can someone please make sense of this! If its such a fraud issue, why let me use the card? Is it worth complaining?

    LOL.

Easier to borrow money than to repay it these days!

Nationwide aren't the silliest, I'd imagine, but it's done 'to protect you', not make jobs for people in banking, honest!
.....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam
  • Blimey! I opened a Flex Account with them plus a CC just after Xmas - not once did they ask for any kind of ID.

    Grr!
The mad thing about it is that I can just carry on using the card and they arent bothered about ID or anything. Its just if I want to register with Internet Banking, then they want to see ID!?
  • Thats really weird as the first thing I did was to register for internet banking minus any ID checks!

i think a letter is in order to see why, if ID checks are so important, they dont do them before granting someone a card, and why, they still let me use the card.
  • Bank of Scotland sent me some letters last year claiming new legislation meant that I had to go into a BOS branch with my identity papers so they could take copies. I just ignored them and haven't heard anything since. I would never agree to let any company keep copies of my ID, and if they want to verify my identity they can come to me, at their expense.

i moved to Nationwide from Abbey 18 monhs ago .I had to bring two types of ID with me .One photographic , one utility bill .
I was told I could do everything online rather than in branch ,but the account would not be activated until I brought the ID to the Branch .
  • I've had my account with Nationwide for some years now, I even have internet banking a/c, I have never need to produce photographic id to handle either account.

When I got my nationwide CC card, I had a bit of fun getting the internet side set up. The confusion seems to stem from the 'Internet Banking' side of things. Nationwide told me that I could only access my CC online if I applied for 'Internet Banking' (ie. a Nationwide Current account accessed via the internet). This turned out not to be true and I was able to register (via the Nationwide website) to view my CC online (ie. not full blown internet banking). There was no need to visit any branch or provide photo ID.

    Try the registration page at

Under account type, just choose 'Credit Card' option.

This is initially what they told me too. That I cant have Internet Banking if I dont bank with them!

I did try to register on that link with the Credit Card option, and after filling it all in, i get the 'unable to verify address' message.
