High gas bill, hope you can help

    (a) Don't rely on the temperature the room thermostat is set to - they are incredibly inaccurate. Use it only as a simple dial, rather than believing the set temperature is correct.

    (b) even if the thermostat was correct, it being set at 18C when the highest outside temperature is only going to reach 12C today (and that's in central London - it'll be colder elsewhere) means you will be using heating to maintain an 18C indoor temperature.

    (c) having heating on 24/7 will use a lot of energy.

    The house is probably warm because you have the heating on 24/7 and the thermostat set to a high level. If you don't believe me, turn the heating off altogether and see (a) if you get cold and/or (b) you use less gas.

  • im sorry may be im not making myself clear, thermostat is turned all the way down, unless we get cold and then we never turn it up above 18oc.
