redundancy protection insurance question

My partner and I work(ed) for the same company - I was made redundant yesterday and frankly I question how much longer he could be in a job for as it appears the wheels are coming off the firm. I'm keen for him to sort out some sort of redundancy protection insurance in case but just can't seem to work it out! In my defence I am pregnant and this all came as a bit of a shock...
Does anyone have any recommendations or things to look out for - do these policies pay out if you get made redundant in a month for example? does the money you receive only go to cover mortgage payments or can you get higher cover for associated payments such as maintenance (standing amount paid to the freeholders), contents insurance, general credit repayments to do with the property (kitchen repayments etc)?
Any help or comments very gratefully received indeed.
(mods please move if this is the wrong place)

Unfortunately I suspect that if 'the wheels are coming off the firm' then it's not going to be possible to get cover - these sort of policies won't pay out if there is a reasonable chance of redundancy before you take it out.0
