Ive got a garmin i3 and the other day i put a post code in of somewhere i wanted to go but the address had no number and so the sat nav failed to get me to where i wanted to go. Do all sat navs do this or is it just my garmin being a pain ?. Its not the first time it has done this, i would update it but ive lost a vital piece of information which i need to update the i3, i understand how a post code covers a wide area and its the building number which narrows it down to a building but do companies have a post code which is specific to that building eg i think the post code for supermarkets are specific to them

Our postcode at work is unique to just our building and we tell EVERYONE who uses a sat nav to find us to ignore putting in the road name cos there are two of that name both under the same first part of postcodes, so we tell people to put in the road number. But they normally ignore us and phone up when they get lost.

If you had to put a building number in why didnt you just put number 1 or something?

Most postcodes don't cover a wide area. Mine has 14 houses, my dad's in outer London has 40, but they are all on the same street. I have an I3 and I just stick in any old number when I only have a postcode. Normally gets me close enough to where I want to go.
No reliance should be placed on the above.

On the Garmin I3, when it asks for a house number and you don't have one, put in zero, it then takes you to the middle of the postcode area.

In towns a postcode will cover a few hundred yards, out in the country a postcode can cover several miles.

You still have to use some commom sunse with a sat nav. As Altarf says in the country it can cover a large area. I always have to ask folk if they are using a sat nav if they are I tell them where to stop and call otherwise it takes them to completely the wrong road.
  • i always double check it with google maps first
