Flood risk; is there a way to tell?

I’m currently looking for to buy my first home and trying my best not to fall for any tricks. The area I live in was hit very badly by the floods, is there anyway to tell/find out if houses have flooded in the past or are located in flood risk areas?
Thanks.
Thanks.

close to a river is a big clue. Ask the neighbours as well as the owners.0

aside from the obvious, such as nearby rivers, id also check for local lakes and resevoirs.
an internet search will show areas of flooding over the last 50 years, and i personally like living on the biggest hill in the town!Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000
current savings: 20,500 (target hit yippee!)
Debts: 8000 (student loan so doesnt count)
new target savings by Feb 2010: 30,0000 -
I am signed up for Floodline Warnings Direct and will get text messages.

go to the Environment Agency website & put in the postcode of the property your interested in. If its been flooded or near it it will show up.Not Again0

A starting point is the Environment agency flood map. Just put the prospective postcode / area in :-
http://maps.environment-agency.gov.uk/wiyby/wiybyController?topic=floodmap&ep=map&lang=_e&x=265980.0&y=192860.0&scale=4&layerGroups=1,&layerGroupToQuery=1&location=Swansea
Proximity to a river isn't sound guidance. Lots of areas were flooded last year that were miles away from water courses. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

and likewise lots of places can be next to water or river but many feet above it's level0
