I do work for a large company that has 100s of HP laptops. People are always complaining that after it is about 12 months old the battery will not run it for more than about 15-20minutes. As indicated in dacouch's post HP advise that when operating the laptop on mains power for any period of time you should remove the battery.

I know they don't have to last forever but they should last for a reasonable amount of time... maybe I'm fussy but I would expect a laptop to last for longer than 17 months.

It only needs a new rechargable battery.

If the battery in your car failed would you scrap the car??

I'm confused. Is the laptop faulty, or the battery? It's just that we keep talking about the battery not working so this means the laptop "hasn't lasted". Which is it?

I'd like laptop batteries to last for a couple of years. I wouldn't necessarily expect it however. Batteries are usually covered by a separate warranty to the laptop overall and excluded from the normal warranty coverage precisely because of the issue you describe. I would definitely expect some degradation of a laptop battery over 17 months, while we can quibble about the degree all day the idea that it could happen isn't unusual in the slightest. Sorry.

My HP has been a bit funny on charging the battery recently, I suspect a driver for the battery / mains my be wrong.

Sometimes when I hover over the battery icon it says its not charging when I put the battery in. I have found this corrects itself if you go into the HP care and select trouble shooting tools and then do the battery test. It initially tells me that the battery is faulty and it needs replacing, then after about 30 secs it says the battery is in good health and starts charging.

Try doing that and see if the battery starts charging

i brought a HP laptop too with a 2 yr warraty and the mother board went after 10 months so u would think it would be ok,,,NO, HP failed to collect it 4 times and when they did they said it was dented,,,i said that wasnt true and that the courier had checked it. when they couldnt use that excuse i got a letter to say its warrenty was voild as it was in fact a spillage that made it stop working. lies!!! That laptop had no dammage or spillage at all. I complained 3 times and am disgusted that HP could LIE about this to aviod paying for the repairs. I dont seem to have a choice now. £500.00 gone through no fault of my own. They actually chaged their story 3 times when giving me an excuse as to why the warrenty wouldnt cover it
