Loose change

Hi all
Been watching this forum for a very long time and think it's great that everyone is so supportive without being judgemental.
I wonder if anyone can help with any suggestions - I tend to save all my loose change, i.e. 1p, 2p and 5p coins. In the past I have taken it all to one of those machines in Sainsbury's and used the money to do some shopping. However, they charge and I feel that right now my need for money is greater than theirs! Banks are very fussy about how much they take in one go and going to the bank every Sat to bank this money will wipe it out anyway as I will have to pay for petrol (my bank 8 miles away) and parking at 60p a time.
Any ideas?

Have you got any children with savings accounts?? Most banks etc will accept bags of coins when paid into kids accounts - don't know whether you'd then be able to take it out though???20p Saver Club #33 60p/£100

I recently counted all my loose change up, I collect mine in an whiskey bootle, my total was over £55
I was so shocked.
I bank with the Natwest and as long as your change is bagged up correctly i.e £1 in 1p's, £5 in 10p's etc they will let you pay in as many bags as you want. You can go into one of their branches and open a step account there and then, just take teo forms of ID, 20 mins later you will have your loose change account and you can pay it all in at once.
I made the mistake a couple of yrs back by using a machine at Sainsburys, it was poor laziness on my part - just the easy option....and an expensive one at that, Im sure they take 10% or something like that.
Good luck

Hi, I took my 1p & 2p’s to the bank and they changed it without charge. I did have to count it out before though. Before you groan  let me explain! I counted out 100 1p and 50 2p once, weighed them and then bagged them out according to the weight of the coins needs to make £1.00 of each. It is on average 356 grammes per £1.00 for both 1p and 2p. Out of the £8.00 I got back from the bank I was only out by 3p; and they gave me those back. Hope this is helpful.

No, we don't have any children. Usually I will try and use up the loose change in my purse, as I go along but OH doesn't.
I checked with my bank (Halifax) a few years ago but they might be able to accept it all in one go, if bagged correctly.
Thanks.0 -
I think that the change machines, although they charge 7% are actually very good. it saves all that time bagging and counting up - this bagging and counting i feel also takes the fun out of watching the numbers add uprkh001 wrote:No, we don't have any children. I'm not sure but I thought those coinstar machines didn't charge you if you were going to redeem the money off your shopping in that particular store??

I bagged up my loose change and the bloke in the corner shop took it off me very greatfully!0

You can take it to your post office - they'll change it too. We ask for bags and they're happy to give us a handful, so it's just a case of pop it on the scales to double check and then they hand over the money. If you're lucky you can also pay straight into your bank at the post office - depends who your bank is, I think!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 002 :rotfl:0

Thank you everyone. I will go the post office tomorrow and check with them.
By the way I seem to have joined the £2.00 coins savers club (not consciously) and have £8.00 :-)0 -
Our post office has a coin machine to buy single stamps, I always use up my pennies there, plus you dont have to queue to buy stamps!0
