I took a combined degree and in one subject we were told definitely no first person EVER. However, in the other subject (a social science), we were told that we could use the first person, and that this was the more modern way of academic essay writing - at least, it was in that discipline/field/area, which admittedly was quite 'new' and quite small. Personally I don't like it so I never used it, and I got told my essays were 'old-fashioned' and 'formal' lol. I still got good marks so it didn't bother me0 -
This is where it can get confusing as we often have to do reflective pieces where it is then appropriate to write in the first person of 'i'!!!!!!
I ususally just clarify with the tutor before I start so as to avod any huge 'gaffs'!!!!!0 -
Writing in the first person can be acceptable, but it depends on the subject and the actual writing style of the author and the intent of the piece of work.0

we were told 'I' is ok in the intro a few times if you must e.g. "I intend to show" etc but not a good style. I tend to write for the lecturer who is to mark it. They do have different ideas.0
