Hi wasn't sure where to post this so please move if its in the wrong place.
my mum and dad have been running there own business for aout 8 years and we think they may have been conned
A man came in from a supposed property company and bought a fair amount of goods over a week paying by cheque each time.
these were all busness cheques with his company name on. they have now all come back unpaid adding up to about £4000 alltogether, they have been in touch with this man and he said its because he is changeing accounts and would come in this week with cash to clear it up.
just wondered if they have a leg to stand on if he doesnt come in, is there anything they can do or do you just have to take this as learning a lesson the hard way.
any advice appreciated.

Get your parents to provide full details to the fraud section of the local Police .... they may be able to advise if they are aware of any other 'victims'. And whether they will take it on as a fraud case.
Also speak to their local Trading Standards and see if the trading name brings up any current complaints? They may be prepared to add their voice to any fraud aspect.
..... or the guy may turn up with the cash ..... and we can all be surprised! If the cheques were returned RD as opposed to 'account closed' - there's a problem. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
never take cheques - even with a payment card they are dodgy even bankers cheques have been known to be dodgy0

Yet another reason to hate cheques with a fiery passion. If you must take them, give them the full six days to clear for fate before releasing the goods. What would William Shatner do?0

same thing happened to my parents, luckily their chq was for a significantly smaller amount. they presented it to the bank numerous times, but kept bouncing, in the end they just gave up. But i'd definitely chase yours up!!0

If someone offers a cheque take their picture as well as the contact details.
Also note the transport details.
Anything that can help identify or track the person.
If during the day phone the bank while they are there.0 -
well my dad went to his supposed adress today and it was just empty ground were houses had been demolished so not good.
we have a supposed name for him though and his vehicle registration so my dads going to let police know tommorow, not that we expect they'l be able to do anything.
strangest thing is this man still answers his phone when my dad calls him keeps telling him he's coming in then he doesn't, no idea why he's bothering when he obviously isn't going to pay.0 -
I'm suprised that someone who had run a business for 8 years would fall for this. Unfortunately there may not be a happy ending to this for them.0
