Cabo Roig

My mum bought a wee villa in this area a couple of months ago and am heading over there next week for a week. Have read a wee bit about the area on a couple of websites but wondered if anyone can reccomend any nice bars/restaurants in the area or anything else to do?? I don't like the typical Benidorm kind of place and can speak a bit of Spanish so want to go exploring.
ITs come up a few times as peoples worst place they have had a holiday but as long as the weather is better than here and there are places to explore I will have a good time.

At least the weather should be nice....Torrevieja which is just down the road looks fantastic in the rear view mirror, full of ex pats, chav's and winno's from the uk, but then we do share our gene pool with most parts of the world

I unfortunately booked a golf party for 12 into Villas in Torrevieja and we all agreed within a few hours of arriving that the RAF should use the place for a bombing run. We moved to La Manga which was very nice but a gated type complex, however, it was well run and the golf was pretty good.

Dont know much about Cabo Roig itself, although there were some nice little places inland, just needed a car to get about. Also went to the Mar Minor where there were some nice bars etc amongst the flourescent tubes and ear shattering thumping sound.

I am a part time resident of the Costa Calida and would suggest if you have a car ....

    follow the N332 south.

San Pedro del Pinatar is worth a visit, a nature reserve on the salt flats where you will see the flamingos by the thousands eating shrimp on the flats.

Then further south into the Bay itself and this time of year there are not too many people about so hire a bike and cycle or walk along the miles of shore front pavement( World Health Organisation have listed the bay and close area as the 5th best best place to live with its climate and air quality)

A trip inland to Murcia city is a lovely place to be with so many cafes and parks in the city along with numerous little roads leading to plazas with fantastic churches and old moors buuldings.

Also Inland there is the Sierra Espuna national park.

Further south towards La manga ( La manga the strip is very English and now starting to show its age with its old hotels) you will find Cabo de palas ..head for the marina and if you get there in the morning watch the spanish Air force ( based in Murcia Airport )training over the med as you enjoy a well deserved cofee and Churro :T .
Cartagena is a great place to expore and easy to get to via train (as is Murcia) and then round the bay you have Mazzaron and Aguilas ...plenty to do and most of the days there are some excellent markets in all these towns, even Torrevieja has a great friday market at the North end of the town with some good deals on shoes and local produce  .

Have fun and its a lovely safe area and look out for menu de dia (menu of the day) which most GOOD restaurants have in the week for around € 9.00 for 3 courses and a glass of local vino

Also a good place to eat are Ventas ... ok they are for locals mainly and may look not the best place externally but inside you can find the best food ..be assured

On the N332 north about 2k to Punta Prima is a restraraunt Patio Andalus On the left hand side at the roundabout next to the Euroski shopping complex. it is a Spaninsh rest and is very nice..We always go there when we go. All places feeling the pinch just now and doing good deals on food. Agree with teahfc regarding places to visit. Certainly go into Friday market in Torrevieja Worth a visit but watch your bag. Market on mon at San pedro as well. Walk the new walkway along the coast to Punta prima and there is a nice place to sit and have something to eat and drink at the end.
If the weather is good some nice beaches right along that coast. Cabo roig being one of them.

Unfortunately I don't drive but I will be hiring a bike to cycle around the coastline, some great suggestions there so I will be doing some research and will report back after my trip. I will be travelling alone so am glas to hear its a safe area however I am quite street smart so will be keeping my bag secure when I visit the Torrevieja market for some bargains !
Thanks for your replies  xx

There is a bus stop on the main road. There is a bus runs right down the coast to Cartegena. Im sure it stops at Murcia as well.It also goes into town and up to Alicante if you want a day away . Not sure of times think it once an hour will try to see if I can get them for you. This is also number reliable taxi service if you need one 96 676 10 88 or 96 673 30 38. nice26, thank you! bus times would be great but if you cant get them don't worry, I will ask around when I get there on Wednesday night. I am flying back from Alicante Monday evening so will probably spend the day there explore that area then.
Am sure will be having a few more trips this year so maybe meet up next time!
