Just because he thinks the websites he visits are safe doesn't mean that the hundreds of computers the communications travel through after they leave the original computer and before they arrive at his computer (e.g. ISP's PCs, other servers, internet equipment) won't tamper with it and send a virus or spyware with the webpage.
I read the other day that 9 out of 10 computers is infected with spyware, (that would tie in with your quote albertross
) so if he wants to be part of that 9 then I suggest he keeps going the way he is.
The dangers are publicised everywhere - you think "Oh, it won't happen to me" but one day it will and then he will be sorry.0 -

Hey Fatboy dad!
I have up to date anti-everything software (yes I'm on broadband too) and I get several hits a day, sometimes several per minute - my software tells me.
On my old computer I did not have much protection, and one fine day it got a nasty virus and all my data were written off. OK so I backed everything up, but I'm sure all I had was there available to see by any hacker. I had to reformat the entire HDD an reset it to manufacturer's programs.
You ignore all the good advice by the above posters at your peril! So listen to your son. They're right sometimes, you know?
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
How to convince anyone of the dangers of the Internet:
- Install an unpatched (without SP1 or SP2) version of Windows XP on a spare PC.
- Connect it to the internet.
- Wait.
- Howl in anguish when everything grinds to a halt. Or something.
- Install a NAT router between the PC and the 'net (sneaky).
- Replace Microsoft Windows with Ubuntu or similar (not so sneaky).

Hi,
Present him with a few choice offerings on a CD. Neglect to mention what they are.
JS_SEEKER E is a good one.
One time hit, and embarassment , soon got rid off.
