Advice re car tax
Hi guys, hopefully someone can help me out with a little advice.
My other half inherited a car recently. He can't drive. Shortly afterwards, the tax ran out. I checked the dvla website to see what we needed to get the car taxed (insurance, MOT). MOT is fine, but obviously we needed to insure it. Sorted out insurance in my name as I have a license but have never been insured before. Phoned the DVLA as we were unsure about changing the registered keeper details without the signature of the current keeper who had passed away, they said take it with you when you get it taxed & do it all at the same time. As soon as my insurance cert came through my other half went down to the post office to sort out the tax. They have let him pay for a tax disc, but say it is invalid, and also invalidates my insurance if I were to drive the car. From what I can gather, the only way for the tax to be valid now would be for us to apply for a provisional license for my OH and then insure him on my policy, despite the fact that he has no intention of driving, he just owns the car.
Is there any way for us to fix this without having to add to my already very expensive insurance?
The car is a 5 hour journey away outside a relative's house, I'm panicking that it's going to be clamped/crushed/fined whilst we try and sort this mess out.

Your tax won't be invalid if you have valid tax disk.
You have insured the car and the car has an MOT.
You can now drive it. All you will need to do is sort out the ownership but that can't be too onerous (unless someone is disputing ownership).
I think I have read it correctly so go and pick the car up.0 -
Thanks.
I don't really understand why they sold him it then told him it was invalid until he was insured. Are tax disks linked to a certain person? Apparently the post office told him that there has to be a link between the person who taxes the car and the person who is insured on it.0 -
Pay him £1 for the car, get a receipt;) , and register it in your name.
I don't think you actually need to do this but it would remove all question.
What sort of car is it?0 -
car is taxed not the person i.e when he inherited car it already had a tax disc, if the insurance was sorted then you would have been able drive it.
situation still applies with the new disc. if there was a problem with its validation they wouldnt have issued it .

I think someone at the post office has been out for a few beers at lunch time!!
Either that, or OH did  I rang the DVLA and they say that there has to be a link between the registered keeper and the insurance policy holder, not the person who taxes the car. She did say that they shouldn't have sold him the tax though, as the insurance cert wasn't in his name, and that only the registered keeper can buy the tax, so maybe we'll have to change the registered keeper when it comes time to renew it.
Just to be certain, I phoned the insurance company and they said there wasn't a problem with the registered keeper/ owner not being insured on the car, as I had stated that when I applied, and we have the same address.
I checked the car on that link & it says unlicensed, hopefully that's because he only went to the post office at lunchtime.0 -
Hi. I'll add my sarcastic and worthless comments before going on to help you out...
Does the "pea" bit in your name refer to the size of your brain...?! Lol...0 -
Take the green slip off the V5, scribble your name and address on it - or what ever name it is insured on, take the MOT and yer ins cert. This will give you a tax disc. The PO like to interfer with the rest but just tell them to stop bein bleedin nosey...0
