Amtico Flooring!!

 Just had a quote for the above for floor in new extension - verbally told it would be about £50 a square metre fitted. Therefore expected £800 - 900 absolute max. Quote is for £1500 ( a very exact round figure considering the measurements were not an exact no of squ metres)
Anyone any experience of buying this stuff independently and getting hold of a fitter? I live in the Stoke on Trent area. I know it is a fairly expensive product any way, but this particular tile is part of their low budget range! Can't find anything else we like. Any suggestions??

I bought marley tiles for my hallway. I had a fitter who does all kinds of flooring fit it. He lives down the road...charged about 15sq/m labour. He did a brilliant job for us. The tiles we bought were normally £40sq/m, but they were getting rid of them in a clearance for £8sq/m. Its not too difficult to fit for a good DIY'er as my FIL fits his own. he buys amtico off ebay and gets the glue from a tile shop locally.
I didn't fit my own ...as I'm bone idle  (she says) I wanted to make sure it was put down properly, so got a professional in.

Have you looked at the Karndean range, just as good but not as expensive as Amtico.I know a number of people who've got including myself and are really pleased with it, just about to have it fitted in new kitchen.

Thanks - will look at Karndean and discuss with OH!! Might look at ebay, but never used it and find the thought a bit scarey. Also don't want to get addicted to it the way I already am to this site. Thanks everyone.Weight loss - here we go again - watch this space!

I would strongly advise steering well clear of Amtico. My mum had this installed in our old house (about 100m2 - not cheap) and it scratched and peeled from day 1. Amtico were not interested in putting it right. They claimed it was because we put wooden furniture on it so we put those rubber feet on everything but still the problem persisted.
In the end we have to phone Amtico and ask whether wooded furniture would be a problem with it. The lady on the phone denied that it was possible to scratch the stuff - at which point we asked why ours was peeling.

I'm not sure what you mean by peeling, if you mean the tiles are coming up from the floor, then its been laid badly and the fitters are to blame. If you mean the tiles themselves are peeling, then its amtico's problem and they should sort it out for you.
My FIL had a problem with his floor. he called amtico and they were desperate to protect their name to the point of removing the fitters from their register if they didnt put the floor right. They came back and sorted the problem out. He now fits his own flooring as a result.
These tiled floors are rated by their thickness, and resistant to scratching. amtico is 1st, marley 2nd and the karndean 3rd. Shops and stores have this flooring because its so hardwaring. All of them scratch to some degree.

we have karndean excellent stuff go to the web site and order a catalogue we went to the main showroom and came back with lots of samples but shop around as we had two bathrooms done both the same size at different times by different independent fitters but the difference in cost was 100 pounds most independent carpet shops supply and fit karndean.0

I have karndean in my dining room. This room double as as a hallway and has the staircase too as well as the back door!. It gets very heavy wear as you need to go through it to get anywhere. Easy care was essential as we did look at real stone but to be honest it wouldn't have got the maintenace it needed
The Karndean has been down 2 years now and looks great.0 -
what is the best way to clean and maintain Karndean?0
