Painting - Light Walls & Dark Wood

Is there a preferred method/best practice of painting a room. Do I paint the walls with the white paint first then paint the dark (oak) skirting after, or vice versa?!
It's bugging me.
I've done a test run on the downstairs bog and did the walls first, then skiting second. I used masking tape.
It's bugging me.

Do the light walls first, then if you get any paint on the skirting it will be easire to cover with dark paint. If you do it the other way round, then you will be trying to cover any dark paint splashes with light paint which will be harder to do!
