Refund for an out of date spa voucher??

Does anyone know where I stand on this one?
For Christmas 2007 I recieved a spa voucher (£70) and decided to save it for later on in the year to keep away the winter blues. It came to November and each time I had some dates in mind to use it the Spa told me they were fully booked and they could only offer me dates when I was working.
In the lead up to Christmas there were no dates at all that I could book so I spoke to a member of staff who said they would honour my voucher until the end of Jan 2009 as they couldn't fit me in before the voucher expired (24th Dec 2008).
In January I phoned to book a date and they told me that the Spa had closed for repairs until further notice. I explained my predicament about the verbal honouring of the voucher and a member of staff told me that I could get a full refund.
I went to the Spa the following day only to be told by a manager that this wasn't the case and the refund was only for vouchers purchased in December. He couldn't give me a date when the Spa will be open again and when I told him about my voucher he said I would have to keep phoning up to see when they are open in order to use my voucher.
I don't think the onus should be on me to do this when I made every effort to use the voucher whilst it was valid. Also I'm annoyed that I travelled all the way down there on the promise of a refund and was sent away.
Any ideas? I could really do with the £70 because I feel I have no guarantees with the spa ticket I currently hold.

I've successfully claimed back (under very similar circumstances) from my credit card. It was a gift I'd bought someone else, I got no-where with the company so went to my credit card who refunded me (and I presume claimed back from the voucher people).
Could the person that bought you the voucher do the same?0 -
He bought it with a debit card so I'm assuming without the same safety net as credit cards :-(0

There may be some if it was a Visa Debit card0
