cheap dog food

hi
i am just writing to see if anybody knows of anywere that is doing dog food cheap - wether online or in a shop.
my 2 dogs have been on chappie and it has suddenly shot up from £1.08 to £1.32. last year i was originally paying 86p a tin - i buy the 1.26kg tins (the 3rd largest). because i was unable to pay this i then put them onto tesco discount brand bruno's which was quite good but all i seem to get is problems with that brand now - 1 tin has lovely looking jelly and another it looks like fat/lard. but the lard looking jelly is becoming more.
so i need to find a good dog food for my girls that are in jelly but is not too expensive. i go through 2 ex-large tins a day.
unfortunatly my girls are unable to go onto dry food as they eat it too quickly and im worried incase it causes a gastric torsion!! also i am unable to work due to an injury that has made me unable to walk without crutches therefore im on benefits and money is tight which is why i am unable to afford the chappie any more. if i was working i would not care about the price as all i want is the best for my 2 girls.
if any body knows of any dog food that is on offer or anywere that has it cheap please let me know.
thanks in advance

We used to get ours from Lidl, its 70p for a large tin. We stopped getting it as our dogs prefer chappie and it goes further. The price has gone up in our local Morrisons. Was £1.16 last week, is now £1.25
The convenience store sells them for £1.28! So Morrisons is catching them up.

Could you not use a dry food and soak it?
Each night i add 1 mug of dryfood, half a mug of vytalin and half a mug of porridge oats to each dogs bowl and fill with boiling water right to the top. In the morning its stirred up and put down. Later in the day to whatever is left i add half a webbox to each bowl and some mixer. I`m feeding two big eating dogs for around £8 per week.

Gosh, our three dogs HATE chappie with a vengeance...and my OH who used to breed GR's thinks it is absolutely the best food on the market, especially for delicate tummies. (The GR can be quite runny - yeuch) Anyway....our two papillons hardly eat a thing, but the Retriever would eat us out of house and home given half the chance.
I use Webbox dried complete, mixed with a tin of Asda standard size own dog food in jelly. It's about 2.70 for a pack of six..if memory serves me right. Asda often do specials on Pal and Winalot too....I was getting six tins of Winalot Roasts (even I could eat it..smells great!) for £2.50 for about three weeks, I must have bought up the whole stock. Webbox is VERY reasonable, even compared to Asda own brand.
Maybe Asda is not easy for you to get to though....
I also make my own dog biscuits which she loves, and gets as treats through out the day, along with home made liver bites.

Edit: Also, just thought...have you ever thought about BARF (lol) Bones and Raw Food...or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. It's not for everyone....but I know a woman who feeds her large dogs a totally raw diet - gets it all scraps from the local butcher and it saves her a fortune.
Google BARF...?Life.

Bring it on! :j0 -
perhaps soak dry food and buy working dog food (as it has no vat!)
Or use dry and buy one of those bowls that stops them eating so fast, or put a tennis ball in the bowl to slow them down...0 -
Personally I wouldnt by working dog if your dogs are not working dogs. I know its cheaper so is an easier option for you but it contains higher levels of protein than the original maintenance food so you may find you have 'hyper' dogs running around not getting enough exercise.
However, I would advise what has already been said re soaking the dry food in hot water and allowing it to cool. At the start, none of my dogs would eat the dry food without adding a can, I overcame this by soaking it in hot water. Now they love it and I am saving £11.70 per week!0 -
Mine is on over 40% protein & is fine & not at all hyper, so high protein levels don't mean a hyperactive Dog. I think Working Dog, at least the Wagg brand, is only 2-3% higher in protein also. I agree with FC & wonder if you could try the bowls designed to help prevent bloat (I use one) or putting something in the bowl to slow them down. Wagg works out cheap afaik & i've not heard anything bad about it.0

Working dog Vat exempt food isn't always high protein as i've seen maintenance greyhound food which is no VAT and 20% protein. So you might be able to get other types of maintenance diets for workers, tho i've no idea how greyhound food would differ to other 20% protein foods.
I think i'd also opt for soaking dry food, warm water certainly is absorbed by it quicker. You can add all sorts either a bit of the tinned dog food or sardines/mackeral (great for shiny coats) etc to make it a bit more tempting.0 -

Wagg normal is about 21%, working is 23%, the difference is negligable, and my dog is not hyper at at... both those protein amounts are well within the normal range!0 -
Personally I wont touch cheap dog food with a barge pole if I can avoid it - it's cheap for a reason and could end up causing health problems in the long run, depending on the dog.
One of the best tinned dog foods out there is Butcher's - not sure what the going price at the moment is, though? Also, just feeding tinned or soft food can cause problems with the dogs teeth (tartar build up, etc). Far better to have a mix and vary the diet.
If your dogs are eating fast, try feeding them separately (in my experience dogs eat fast usually for 2 reasons - either they're ridiculously hungry, in which case feed lots of small meals throughout the day if this is feasible, or they're worried the other dog is going to eat their food, and maybe if they finish before the other dog they can steal its food...joyous dog mentality).
Also try and vary the dog's diet as much as possible...we use cottage cheese, raw vegetables, etc and use RAW bones for treats...never feed dogs cooked bones as they're likely to splinter and cause problems.
A raw meat diet, or the addition of some raw meat may be beneficial to your dogs...we used to get the odd marrow bone free from the butcher and our dogs loved it. Raw chicken wings can also make a good meal.0 -
also worth mentioning that it's a very bad idea to suddenly change your dogs diet. Switching to a different brand without doing so gradually can cause upset stomachs, and I can't see anyone wanting to deal with the resultant mess. lol.
If you're going to switch, do it gradually0
