Getting married in 2010? (recession question)

Can I just ask for some opinions, has anyone who was considering getting married in 2010 decided to put it off due to the current financial climate? or have you thought it may be an opportunity to get some bargains? or perhaps parents are paying so its not really an issue?

thanks

You'd have thought it should be an opportunity to get some bargains, but from what I overheard at a wedding show last week, the dress shops at least are just getting in some cheaper (presumably poorer quality/quesionable ethics) lines. The photographers I spoke to were still saying you have to have a gold or platinum package if you want a sat in Sept 2010, to which I thought s*d that I'll wait until you're struggling for work then get a bargain/do it myself.

cheers, just to show my colours I am a wedding photographer, I wont ever try to advertise here, but just wanted to try and a get some opinions.

I have chopped my prices 10%, just wondering if that is enough really, I am realistic that the bargain prices may win
  • I'm worried about putting deposits on venues that go bust! Is wedding insurance a rip off?

We are putting our deposit on a credit card for our wedding next year. At least you are covered if they go out of business.

Kit - try offering a reduced package. One of the photographers on my books normally charges around about £1200 but has now has a reduced price package for £649.

I admit that I won't be changing my prices because with the market I work with the recession doesnt exist for them:j

    I don't blame you, Horace.

My mum (very posh) always says that rites of passage are 'recession-proof' - that we're making history and that the memories will outlast any economic downturn, so we must bite the bullet yet choose carefully where to cut back.

I am very glad that my venue is classy and expensive as it'll be a fantastic moment to look back on when we're old and grey. People will always pay for quality, won't they?

And equally, I'm glad that I made my own invitations and got a Landy dress as those still look expensive and classy, but were cheap as chips! :D But nobody but me will know :p

I don't blame you making your own invitations and your dress will still look expensive - your guests will never know and your secret is safe with me because I won't tell:D

Mind you I had an idea when I was at the chamber of commerce today and that is to maybe hire out cake stands (not that I know much about cake other than eating it:rotfl: ) as well as table centres and maybe sell favour boxes. It will all help - I am trying to recession proof myself.

Congratulations on your forthcoming wedding Minxzy:D

    Thanks, Horace!

Providing several items as part of one service can only help to increase your business - I've got my chair covers and balloons from the same company - plus the lady who's making my cake is hiring out the stand too. It is very unusual - black, wrought iron made by her husband - I just had to have it for the day! So you just have to get a few, unique-looking ones made and Bob's your auntie's live-in lover! :D Maybe some sprayed in silver/gold/red etc to give them more of a 'wow' factor??

I should go into the biz myself! LOL I love all this planning stuff!
