Registering imported vehicle with DVLA
Options
A close relative is returning to the UK from abroad to save some money...euro!!..say no more.
Anyway, he is bringing back a 10 year old foreign plated (Cyprus) car in a storage container which he plans to register and use here in the UK.
I have been checking up things on his behalf and have info re HMRC etc, however I am stumped as to how it is possible to register with DVLA when you have to provide an insurance certificate for the vehicle. It is my understanding that Uk insurance can only be issued to vehicles bearing DVLA registration plates.
Anyone had experience of this that can point me in the right direction.?

I did this many years ago - not with a car from Cyprus, but I was able to get an insurance certificate for "registration" purposes only.0

Speak to the DVLA they will issue you with an import guide pack.
Worked for me when I had to register a bike.

You can get insurance against the Vehicle Identification Number but usually only for a couple of weeks. What goes around - comes around0

Speak to a broker and advise them what you are doing, ask them to issue a covernote or certificate on the chassis number (As this does not change when you change the reg so you can drive it home from dvla). You can then give the dvla proof the vehicle is insured and they will give you the new UK reg.
Don't forget to tell the broker / insurer of the new UK reg number.
P.S You normally find brokers who are situated very near military bases will know exactly how to do this all for you as they handle it a lot when the UK Forces bring their cars back from Germany after a posting there0 -
Just remembered that Liverpool Victoria did it when I brought my bike back from an overseas tour. What goes around - comes around0
