Actually its suprising what people need to steal an identity. If you have for instance an ntlworld.com email, the dishonest person will then know your name and address AND that your internet and probably phone provider is ntl, and also that ntl will have your bank account details - then all they have to do to get it is call pretending to be you and to say something like "i just need to check my account details with you as i have been sent a letter through to my bank saying the direct debit i ordered has not gone out" or something similar and wham bam they have your bank details.

It all depends on the stupidness of the staff but it happenes every day.
