Freak car accident - other driver did not stop!

The way Insurers work is that if your Insurer cannot recover their outlay from someone else eg the other driver drives off, or most thefts, fires or malicious damages or an accident that was your fault then you lose 2 years of your no claims bonus (Unless you had it protected) and the claim is noted as a fault claim.
As other people have stated you have to remember it is a "No Claims Bonus" its not a "No Blames Bonus"0 -
The MIB will not be a lot of use for you in this case as its more for people who have injuries or a large amount of damage to their property. If you go down this route the MIB have an excess of either £300 or £500 (Not sure so no doubt someone will be able to correct me). If you go down this route it could take quite a long time before you get your vehicle repaired and they will deduct the excess from you, there is no guarantee that they will even cover it.
If you use your own insurer, the chances are you will get your car repaired quite quickly and have a courtesy car while its being repaired. However obviously you will lose your no claims bonus, pay larger premiums for a while and have to pay your excess out say weigh up the differences between the two options.
P.S If you cancel your policy miid term there will be an admin fee, if you cancel mid term and you have claimed off your Insurer you will be liable for the premiums until your renewal date0 -

If you have to pay an excess to MIB it is £300. They only charge an excess in cases (like this) where the third party is untraceable. If you use the MIB in a case against an uninsured third party, then there is no excess to pay.
There would be an advantage in using the MIB, in that if they agree to pay out, then your NCB is not affected.0 -
what is the cost to getting the repair done? is it worth actually putting a claim in? I'm guessing a fair bit of work is probably needed if you hit the barrel at speed.
someone that hit my car decided to pay for the repair instead of taking the hit to their NCB.0 -
Geri - awful case. Are you at the insurers?0

It is a sad case and your heart has to go out to their family
I had a slightly similar case where a wheel/tyre came off an artic on the motorway and hit four cars. They all claimed off their Insurers and my client then tried recovering his excess. The Insurers after many many months eventually got the servicing records from the haulage claim and denied responsibility as they vehicle had been maintained etc etc.
This case sounds slightly different as it was a spare wheel so I assume it not been secured correctly so the negligence is probably there. It just shows you how freak things happen and potentially how bad and expensive they can be. Customers always say to me I begrudge paying Insurance as nothing will happen to me and I advise them of the amazing freak occurunces that I have seen that lead up to a claim and also that accidents did not happen I would not be standing here selling you insurance as no one would need it0 -

No, I run a PA scheme for employees of racehorse trainers, and he was employed by one.
I own't have much involvement in this one as I pay the weekly benefits, and his will be a Capital Benefits claim.0 -
Such an awful case.0
