Need to get en-suite shower replaced

Hi all
I know that this board is specifically for finding out whether quotes are fair but I'm at the pre-quote stage and want to make sure that I ask the right questions beforehand so I hope that I don't get shouted down and that someone can help!
A couple of weeks ago the shower in our en-suite bathroom stopped working. I called someone (based on personal recommendation) and they came and looked at it. Diagnosed the problem (thermostatic cartridge was "gone") said that they would get the new part and return to fix. They rang yesterday to advise part is in and would be here today to replace. Plumber arrives but only to tell us that the part is incorrect. He has been chasing and it looks as though the part is obsolete now.
The long and the short of it is that we may well need to look at a new shower. We have identified that we have a low pressure mixer shower with a thermostatic control. When we get new quotes is it best for us to source the shower and then get quotes for installation or do we just go to someone and ask them to supply and fit?
He has said that the tiles will need to come off the walls - do they replace or am I also looking at having to get the whole shower cubicle retiled? I know I want to redecorate the room but I could do without it at the moment.
TIA

Hiya Sporticus
What make & model of shower is it?
My Parent's thermostatic shower housing cracked/failed recently. The shower was fitted nearly 20 years ago & parts are still readily available.
Do you think you're being spun a yarn?Nothing is easy........'til you find out how!0
