Wooden Staircase

My parents are decorating our hall/stairs/landing as a wedding gift. I've always hated my wood plank bannisters, so I was wondering if I can afford to have the staircase replaced while the decorating is going on. I was after something along the lines of:

Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much the staircase and a return piece about 7ft long along the landing would cost?
Just an approx figure would do - thanks

Don't know about the return, but our staircase is a U shape, and was made for us, in softwood, it cost £2400. Something straight for example http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=66256&ts=68972 is £350.

Thanks. I meant just the bannister rail bit and not the whole stairs

Thanks.
Would you know how much it would cost for someone to fit it? Neither of us would feel confident about doing it ourselves. Here I go again on my own....0 -
Replacing our wooden "plank" stairs is something that we looked into at the end of last year. I have a friend who fitted hers along with the help of another friend and they look fab! We figured that for our stairs (basic staircase with 6ft landing return) would cost about £250 for all the parts from Wickes including 3 newel posts and 1 half newel post. They have leaflet guides that might help you work out how much yours will cost. I have no idea how much someone would charge to fit them though
. My husband and muggins (me:D ) will be fitting ours sometime this year. 0 -
I must have the same 'cottage' planks and hate them too!
I had a replacement priced (supply of richard burbridge parts-which are the kind you get at B&Q or other diy stores) backn in 1998 and it came to a total price of £1298.81. The labour part was £420 in those days. (plus VAT)
I never did it then, as I didn't have the money, and now that particular joiner is nowhere to be found.
hope you can extrapolate from 1998 to today's prices.
Nowadays the same company has other ballustrades some of which look easier to install. Just get a few estimates from local joiners and make sure you are asking each for the same thing.0 -
I have just had a bannister fitted in my rental property as there wasn't one there which is unsuitable for families. I had a spindle type fitted and it cost me £120 total! That included parts and labour.
I have no idea why it was so cheap, but it looks good and is sturdy. If you are in the Lincs area i can pass on the joiners details if required.0 -
I am guessing you are refering to just the handrail and spindles (upright sticks), not the entire staircase. If so then providing your newel posts are ok then its a days work for a good carpenter + parts.0
