Am getting married in June so just started looking into things and how they are made etc and knew exactly what I wanted for the wedding and thought hey I could make it myself! Then took them into work and showed others some pics and it has sort of taken off from there.
There is so much stuff out there for this sort of hobby. To be honest though it has taken alot of money to buy all the stuff and alot of my spare time has been taken up. But I think it might actually go somewhere!

Wow! They're fantastic!
Kudos on trying to make a business out of what is obviously a great talent. Websites, craft fairs and farmers markets are the way to go to promote your business.
All I would say is if you are taking money/orders, then you do need to make sure that you are operating on the right side of the law.
You will need to register with your local environmental health department, who will want to inspect your kitchen. (as long as you don't use cream etc, you will be very low risk). They will probably also want you to have passed your food hygenie cert. It does vary between areas though.
Secondly, you'll need public liability insurance; incase someone/thing is injured/damaged in the course of your business.
Good luck in your endevours! Proud DFW Nerd 135 :cool:Sealed Pot Challenge - 0190 -

Your EHO will be very helpful and tell you exactly what to expect - if you go to the food standards agency site there is a free pack 'safer food, better business for caterers', it's a fantastic pack and really gives you lots of information about starting out, and what's expected of you.
FWIW, I'd rethink using cream - as this makes everything a right pig of a job. It must be kept refridgerated, including delivery...which would require a refridgerated vehicle. I decorate cakes as a business, and am on a forum....all our members (to my knowledge) don't use cream, or egg whites (royal icing), as this makes a real difference to your requirements to the EHO.
I'd recommend calling/emailing your EHO, as what will be expected of you will differ greatly to what's expected of a business such as a cafe. (For example, I don't need 2 sinks). They do take into account the fact that you're running a business from home, and don't make unreasonable demands of you. But, you must be registered with the EHO at least 28 days before you start taking any orders by law, so do make sure that you are only taking orders from friends and family until you have done so.
I can see that you've been decorating cupcakes (look fab!), so you may want to meander over to the british sugarcraft guild site. There's a forum there, I'm sure you'll get lots of ideas. (A wilton 1M nozzle - www.sugarshack.co.uk does the best cupcake swirls ever!)
Whatever you do, have fun! Proud DFW Nerd 135 :cool:Sealed Pot Challenge - 0190 -
Thanks Laura Jayne that is all really helpful. Orders have only been from friends at work so I havent panicked too much about all of this. Infact I only bought them in to show them to see what they thought and hadnt worked out prices of anythign then they all started saying "ooh can I order some" which was lovely of course!
The website is great and the nozzle sounds perfect. I havent quite perfected any of my skills yet but certainly got lots of ideas.
Honestly that advice is fabulous and I really, really appreciate it.
Thank you0 -
