.....I think Brown/Darling will abolish tax at the basic rate re interest for pensioners only...they know most of them fail to claim back the tax they pay now and so ...good headline at low cost.....ie the most complex way of doing it as per usaul with the people that gave us tax credits etc

Agreed, an increased level for ISA deposits would be great, as whilst the rates are low, they will eventually have to bounce back and we'll reep the benefits, having said that, they'll probably then introduce something to stop that happening, like an upper limit on ISA savings etc.

It's just so sad that all those that have savings and no debts are getting forgotten, and they seem to think that will make us spend!!! More like put money in other investments than banks!

    What other investments, though?

My husband's just about to retire (not voluntary) and had there been any interest at all, might have just been able to manage.

As things stand, we will have to live on savings which won't last long.

Will it then be seen as deprivation of capital when we, inevitably, end up on benefits?

Certainly if I knew of any other safe - ish investments besides banks, I'd be more than interested.

I think this £75m print is a joke too, they'll inject cash into the banks but cannot force them to lend with it, so banks will just hold the money to improve their balance!

    Make that £75 billion!

If that doesn't work they'll be loading up helicopters with sacks of cash to drop onto the high streets.
