HSBC - Needing Cheque Book to Withdraw Cash

There's bound to have been a thread on this already, but I couldn't see it......

Wanted to withdraw £800 from my HSBC current account. Went into the branch, only to be told you can no longer do that without having your cheque book with you.

The joke is, at the same time I had to do a large telegraphic transfer. So I had the necessary ID on me to transfer almost £12k out of my account, but they still wouldn't give me £800 cash. Apparently the cash withdrawal process changed to add more security.

Just a heads up before anyone else has a wasted trip in there.

What a crazy way to do it! Having possession of a cheque book hardly proves your identity. And what happens to people who don't have a cheque book?

Because they mark that sheet at the back of the cheque book to show that the withdrawal has been made, so mo more than one a day can be made
  • Its just being stupid of HSBC, I had thesame problem once.I went onto their computer and moved the money on faster payment to halifax and collected £1200 in 5 minutes!.
You can't keep a good man down...
  • I seriously loathe this rubbish. They don't need to do this.

Why can't more than one a day be made over the counter?

I can understand the limit on cash machines, but if I go into the branch twice in one day with ID and want to withdraw cash, what's the problem with that?

Entirely incorrect. The truth is we operate a voucher-based counter system. Every transaction, credit or debit, has to be backed by a paper voucher, in the case of cash withdrawals either a counter withdrawal form from a mixed credit book or a cheque.

Basically - plan better. If you call telephone banking then so long as you're not on a Basic Bank Account or Passport (holders of which don't have access to counter withdrawals) they can order you a mixed credit book, with withdrawal slips at the back. Or, if you don't want to plan better, there are other ways of doing things.

So, if a customer has no need for a cheque or credit book, they have to keep one around simply to withdraw money, or do you provide these slips at the branch?

But surely it would be so much easier for HSBC to print withdrawal slips when the customer makes a withdrawal, and get the customer to sign this. That way, HSBC still have a paper record to keep, but it doesn't rely on the customer to have to carry around a cheque book or 'mixed credit book' just in case they want to get some money out.

It sounds like a very inconvenient way of running things, and from the way you describe it is hardly helpful to the customer.

I have a cheque book. I don't carry it round as I barely ever write cheques anymore. I didn't think to take it as I've drawn out large sums of cash plenty of times in the past before this change in process. So you're saying I should phone telephone banking before I go into a branch to do something, to make sure the process is still the same? I've been with HSBC over ten years and OH is a Premier customer, they've made more than enough money off of us, a courtesy letter to let me know when things like this change surely isn't too much to ask.

"Plan better" is what the HSBC staff member is telling me after they decide to change the process without telling people!

I actually wasn't all that wound up about it till now.

Nope they don't have the slips and it really is a pain to withdraw money over the counter in HSBC.

I requested NOT to have a chequebook last year (as I cannot remember when I last wrote one, and I do have one chequebook with another current account for the blue moon occassion) and was told I had to have one in order to make counter withdrawals. I was never offered a 'mixed credit book' and have never heard of this before.
