Tesco Grocery Delivery

One of the items I ordered was as packet of Birds Eye Fish Fingers for £1 and they have just been delivered at a price of £1.48. I rang Customer Services who told me it was only a guide price, surely this cant be right as if they had increased each item by 50% my bill would have been astronomical. Is there anything I can do, sorry it might seem that I am making a big fuss over 48p but I think I should have been informed of this increase somewhere along the line before it was delivered. TIA

  • It does state on the website before you enter your payment details that the total is only a guide price and that prices may change between the time you book and the time they pick your shopping.

The same thing happened to me with scallops over Christmas. Luckily they had run out and so I got a cheaper substitute, but the scallops were not half price at all Tesco stores, so my local one would have charged £5.99 a pack and not £2.59!

I cant really complain as I did quite well with discount codes and got enough money off to cover the delivery cost and a bit extra but just think they are cashing in if they do this with at least one item on all their deliveries, they are laughing all the way to the bank. If it was a few pence I probably wouldnt have noticed but with a 50% increase approx and no acknowledgement of this Im a bit annoyed but I guess there isnt much that can be done. Another annoying thing is that a bottle of alcohol that I ordered came with its security tag on so it was sent back and so we have to go to the store anyway. Thanks for your help

  • I'm convinced that they also miss items off your favourites list in the hope you will forget to order something and have to place another order sooner than you expected. They also often say some of my favourites are "not currently available". I suspect they're just "not currently available" to my account and they're hoping I'll place another order in the following couple of weeks (I only order once a month) and buy extra stuff, get them an extra delivery charge etc. I haven't quite gone as far as setting up another account to test this theory, but I may do if I get really bored one day!

They do make it quite clear that if an offer expires prior to delivery, it will be charged at the post-offer price. It's up to you to check the offer expiry dates.

I will take this on board whilst doing my next weeks order, not sure what it actually said now but I will definitely scrutinise the red print in future. I notice that one of the items on my recent orders has now been replaced by another similar item but stating "having you considered" above it. I dont know if this is because they dont stock the original item anymore but the item I usually buy has definitely disappeared, I will check in store when I go. I tend to go between Asda and Tesco depending on which store I can get the best deal.

This is different from the OP's situation. You're right that if an offer expires before you have your order delivered, you will be charged the normal price. However, the other issue, as the OP discovered, is that items that are not on any kind of offer can also increase in price between ordering and delivery. With regard to the expiration of offers, any that are due to expire before your delivery date will be highlighted to you when you go to checkout, before they allow you to put in your payment details, so it should be very clear. Unfortunately, with the latter issue, there isn't really any way of knowing if any of your items have increased in price until you actually receive the delivery.

The problem is not the dates listed for offers, the problem is that not all stores do the same offer, so if your order is delivered from a store which for some reason is not running that particular offer then you get charged the full price.

To be fair to Tesco I cant actually remember what it said originally all I know is that the price was £1 which is what it says on my email from Tesco and I probably wouldnt have purchased them at all if they were £1.48.

    1Birds Eye 8 Fishfingers Crispy Batter 240g Each£1.00£1.00

It then goes on to say at the end of the email.

"If the final price charged for any item is more than you wanted to pay, you can return it and we?ll give you a full refund. Just give it back to the driver and we?ll take care of it for you".

I suppose this is fair enough but you cant really expect the delivery man to wait while you go through your whole order to check whether the price is correct. Perhaps a product like this should be brought to the your attention the same as a substitution but that would be more difficult for the people packing the order.

Unfortunately at the end of the day it is just the downside of online ordering. I agree that it unrealistic to expect people to check every item, the poor delivery men have so little time as it is! I have had a few orders where special offers were unavailable or they had simply run out, what makes it worse is that they then seem to substitute something totally inappropriate! I try to avoid online ordering now as the last one we had was just ridiculously bad. Nothing beats looking at the items yourself in the shop! :D
