Options
Good Morning all, I am back with another question regarding applying for finance.

I have moved back in with my dad (who is retired) he is recovering from illness.

For the past 1.5 years I have been living in student accommodation (away from home) and have lived off the loans and bursary.

When it come to applying for the years 09/10 finance what one should I been clicking on, I am a mature student.

I have no income or savings, my Dad has little money.

Sorry for being dumb but I cant remember if I should be means tested or non-means tested?

Can anyone offer help please?:D

Year spent as a student do not count towards independent status (which I assume is what you mean). If you're already getting your Student Loan, Grant and Bursary then you're already getting all the funding available.

Is your father claiming all the benefits available to him?

Hi.... yeah dad is claiming what he can.
I need to apply for funding for sept 09. I will be attending a new uni.
I support myself financially is what I am getting at. So will I need to claim for means tested or non means tested funds?

How old are you if you are over 25 in the September of the year of study you can be classed as an independent student.

Ok lets try this with a different approach...

What is the difference between means testes and non means tested?

If you're an an independent student who isn't living with a partner, any funding is means tested solely on your own income. If you have already had funding for 1.5 years you're not likely to get your fees paid for your first year of study.

You want to apply for means tested. Everyone eligible for Student Finance gets 75% of the funding available. In order to get the other 25% you have to be means tested. This means they take in to consideration your unearned income (savings, investments etc...) while making the decision to give you the other funding. Being means tested also means you'll be eligible for any grants your university provides (just tick the box which says the SLC can share your information with your university).

If you are attending a new university will you be transferring this year's credits or will you be applying for a new course altogether?
This has bearing on what funding will be available to you.

I have only had funding for the first year...but from what I gather I will still have to pay my fees....unless I have compelling evidence.........mmmmmm any idea on what that really means?

    BTW thanks ONW.:T

Sorry, misread the bit about 1.5 years. Normally you're allowed one year for a "false start" so that most people can get 4 years of funding.
