Photo ID required to pay in CASH !

Just noticed this when booking an Ibis hotel room:

"Special terms : : Valid photo ID (passport/driving license) is required for cash payment"

Has this country gone stark staring raving mad ? You now need an ID card to pay in cash.

If you offer cash and don't have photo ID with you, what do they do - call the Police ?

  • I had same problem at another hotel chain at Luton airport. Asked me for credit card but I didnt have one on me, after a bit of discussion they took my cash. They didnt ask to see any ID though.

If you go all "rock star" and trash the room and do a runner they want to be able to track you down.

Like the other poster said - if you pay cash they have no way of chasing you for money if you do any damage or nick the telly/pillows/kettle/coathangers/whatever/break the desk whilst shagging/puke up/etc, unless they get your ID details.

Seems like a very reasonable course of action for a low-cost hotel chain.

If you pay by card, they just take the money for the damage...

I've been asked for ID in Premier Inn and Ibis hotels when I've paid for a room with cash.

not if you pay for the room by card because a card is considered sufficient ID. I know in Premier Inns that a credit or debit card can be used as ID even if your not paying by it - my mate has no ID at all and she used to use her Visa Electron as ID. Now I get to pay for the room as I have a Visa Debit card and a Mastercard with which to pay!! (lovely eh)
The exception is if you are from outside the UK (bizarrely this doesnt include the Republic of Ireland) when you have to provide your passport details (I used ot know why but I cant remember - its to comply with some act or another)
