Receipts (or, am I entitled to confirmation of payment)

Hi Everyone

My first post, how exciting :D

I was just having a wonder... Am I legally entitled to a receipt when I pay someone money?

If you go to the supermarket they give you a receipt after you've paid.

But I've noticed on some "agreements" (eg some parking fines or loan agreements) that the companies state that they do not send receipts or acknowledge payment received (or at least will charge you for it).

Is this legal? I've had a cursory glance through consumer direct et al but haven't found anything yet.

Any thoughts?

Pete
