Which pot to buy??

I wonder if somebody could give me some good advice.

I want to grow some lettuce, spinach & rocket in pots this summer for the first time. I'm looking at plastic pots as they are cheaper and I see that Lidl have troughs (normal and self watering) and self watering square pots on offer. But I'm confused which ones to get  can somebody help please.

Thank you

Where are you growing your crops?

The only lettuce and salad leaves I've grown I've grown in normal pots.

The self watering pots I use are for thirsty plants normally flowering plants that I would have to water twice/three times a day in summer due to them being placed in direct sunlight for most of the day.

I got some pots last year from my local pound shop - for a £1 obviously lol - they weren't massive, but were big enough for salad leaves in one pot, and some radishes in another etc, might be worth seeing what your local shops have on offer, as they get different stock in quite often. I always get my plant food etc from there as well, is good quality especially considering the price.

Hi thanks both for your advice - I won't bother buying the expensive self watering ones and look out for some small cheap pots.

I grew my lettuce last year in some cheap troughs and my neighbour used normal plant pots.
Do you have a local Poundstretcher? I discovered one the other day and I bought too massive planters for £7 (for the 2 of them). A trough for your lettuce would be much cheaper than that.

I've never done this myself...but people have posted that if you ask nicely, supermarkets will give you the black buckets they sell flowers in. Would have thought they would be big enough for salad crops.

Wow thanks everyone, I was thinking I would need a big pot but obviously any pot will do. Will try and get some this weekend but is it too early to sow the seeds?

Straight outdoors yes. It's still very cold at night.

    Indoors no.
