ok 2 hours a day gets you averaging 50 units a month? I think not!!! we have just had another scottishpower rep come to the door today and I managed to get his name as he said again that there is something seriously wrong to be heating 4 normal sized radiators and 1 small radiator 2 hours a day at 60 quid a month, someone please tell me im not going bloody mad am I?

I know there are more of us, but we share bath water, and in the summer use at least a unit of gas a day. So that's 30units a month just for hot water and maybe having the heating on for an hour in the evening on a colder day. I don't see 50units a month as excessive.

As for the SP rep, he may know what he's talking about it, but my son's friend did doorstop selling for an energy company when at uni and their remit was to tell people whatever it took to get a contract, or put the company name in a favourable light so I'd not take any notice of that.

Just been reading your post Will i am and had a similar problem with Scottish Power, i had changed to them thinking I would save money. When the bills started coming in i noticed that i was paying more than i ever had?? I knew it had been cold but had been really frugal with the heating so i couldn't work it out. After many questioning complaints, passed from pillar to post phone calls with Scottish Power i finally got a solution. I had been charged twice, they had put the wrong figures in from their side. Now i am not rubbish at maths but the bills are i admit always a complete mystery to me. There was no apology or nothing just a blank voiced guy on the end of the phone saying 'sorry yeh!! we charged you twice' now if i hadnt bothered to look in to it i would have never known. I am not happy at all with their service. Check it out, if it doesn't sound right its very likely it isn't!!!!

the heating is set at 23 degrees and the boiler is on level 3 so no its only on half power if its got the options of level 1-5 then maximum. ...
What make & model of boiler do you have?

It's unlikely that having the boiler on level 3 means it consumes half the maximum power.

e.g. on a Glowworm Micron 40FF (ca. 40,000 btu/13kW) boiler, the difference between maximum & minimum settings is only about 3kW and the midpoint being about 1.5kW less than maximum

I've just got my gas bill today for the period November to February, £12.60, the robbing swines!
  • £12.60???? i bet ur livid lol. My boiler is a potterton profile but not sure of the model/spec, just been up to look at the boiler... if I look through into the pilot light and adjust the level down to minimum, should the fire inside the boiler reduce and vice versa if I increase the level???? just a thought since I know nothing about boilers but when I do this the fire just stays at the same strength, just a thought that the boiler level control may be broken and default at max???? any thoughts......

    No.

On the Potterton Profile model range, the adjustment simply controls the temperature of the water as it leaves the boiler (from 55°C at position "1" to 82°C at position "max")

The boiler will use full power to try & produce the set flow temperature as it leaves the boiler. The boiler should then cycle on & off if necessary to maintain desired flow temperature.
