cant find anything when pluged in to USB

i put something into the usb slot IE.sat nav, phone,mp3.
my computer finds it first time, puts it the computer.
then i try to plug the item in the next time and i cant find it.
do i have something ticked/or not ticked that says only read once?
can you help?
