I'm trying to get a annual family travel quote and been through travelsupermarket.com & confused.com. The question is, the results show lots of cheap quotes from unknown companies so can these be reliable?

The real benefit in buying travel insurance, the bit you are actually paying most of the money for and the bit that is worth paying for, is the 24-7, 365 multilingual helpline and medical cover and personal liability cover.
That cover will mean that if you or one of your family fall ill or have an accident, you can call them day or night and talk to someone in your language who will be able to:
- direct you to immediate medical attention,
- talk to that medical service in their language
- explain what is happening to you
- Send one of their team of UK doctors to you at a few hours notice
- Arrange to airlift you by air ambulance back home
Look in the policy summary or wordings and find who provides this 24-7 service and Google their name along with the insurers.
The other bits are nice to have, particularly cancellation, airline or travel company failure, etc and are probably more likely to be claimed on but are often not comprehensive. Be sure you read these sections of the policy before buying to check it will cover the holidays you will be booking and what you expect.
These claims are usually dealt with in writing and will take longer to process because of that. They should all offer help to make sure you have all the information you need to make the claim.
It may be a good idea to understand what information you would need to get to make a claim just before you travel just in case (usually this will be things in writing from the carrier). At the very least carry the documents with you when you go.
I have just bought a policy with insurewithease as it was cheap and a colleague said they had found them helpful with a recent travel cancellation claim. I found them though a price comparison site.0
