I do agree with some of what's being said and I think we pretty much used a lot of these tips when selling our house....however the house we have just moved into was a totally different story, I'd completely ignored it when looking for houses on Rightmove.
We happened across it when driving round the area one day and the location of it stood out straight away
The property was empty so we had a look round the back and even though it had more of a yard than a garden, funny parking and needed loads of work doing to it we just fell head over heels.
I just knew we were going to buy it before we'd even viewed it!0 -
This thread is funny! When we were 'doing this house up' to sell it, I was insistent on decorating the bathroom the way I did - I call it my 'Malmaison' bathroom, for people who have ever stayed in one of their hotels, red walls, black woodwork, black laminate, black, white and grey tile effect on the bottom half and a pure white bathroom suite. I admit I did it to my tastes.:o
However, when we showed friends the sales brochure, the first thing they said was 'I LOVE the bathroom!', and the people who are buying it, the girl said her boyfriend is obsessed with it!:D We've had 3 viewings by the way, the third one offered and we took it.
I still think we had an advantage because it gives people something to remember. I am making DH eat his words because he didn't think the colours would even work in the first place, let alone it become a selling point!:D0 -
"Mine's the one with the "funny" smell...."
Thanks, that made me laugh.Smile, you are beautiful:)0 -
The house that we are buying right now has been empty since last July when the 86 year old owner died
The decor is hmm. I won't say hideous because it truly isn't, but every single room has wallpaper with a wallpaper border in it.
Features: The only thing that the OH really cares about is the fact that it has a kitchen, bathroom, shed, and integral garage. I like the fact that it has a conservatory, the bathroom is a wetroom, the garden is big enough that I can have a vegetable plot as well as lawn area and because of the fact the guy was so old, there is a stairlift (which will come in handy when I want to go to bed and need a bit of assistance after coming back from the pub! Athough him indoors said we can just take it out and put it on freecycle or ebay after we get bored with it)
Outside space Yeah about that garden. Well you can tell that it was actually really well maintained, but the guy has been dead since July of last year so its a bit..........wild. Nothing that a bit of work wouldn't fix but I can see how it put some people off (yay)
Personally I tend to look at the shell of the house rather than being lured in by fixtures and fittings. It's a hell of a lot cheaper I've found to do the decorating yourself than to buy the one that is already done upIt's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0
