Engagement Ring Nightmare!

I have had to take my engagement ring back 3 times due to diamonds falling out. Luckily my husband bought a 2 year insurance policy when he bought the ring so we have not encountered any charges. When we got married we had a wedding ring made to fit the shape of the engagement ring.
Ernest Jones have recommended that we have a replacement ring now as it is quite obvisually faulty and also the insurance has almost expired which would leave us with a bill should any more diamonds fall out. The problem with this is that the ring is now discontinued. They have said I could choose another up to the same value of the first one but don't have any that fit my wedding ring - any ideas?????

Sorry I've no idea how to rectify your problem but you should not be left with a ring you can't wear can they not get a ring made up in the same shape to fit with your wedding ring? Reason I really posted was to say that I bought my daughter a diamond ring for her 21st last year from the same place and they have just replaced it due to diamonds falling out. Maybe they need to look at the quality of their diamond rings.0

If Ernest Jones are advising that a repair would not fix the problem, and that they are unable to replace it like for like, you are eligible to get a partial refund.
In the case of a partial refund you would get back the percentage of its expected lifespan back (if it was expected to last 20 years and only lasted 2, you would get 90% back). With this being a ring i am unsure what the expected lifespan would be as you would expect it to last your entire life.0 -
op, whatever you get told - don not pay for repairs, even after the 'insurance' has expired. They've sold goods that are not up to scratch and have a legal duty to put it right. As for replacing the ring I'd have a chat to a local independant jeweler about how much it would cost to make a ring to your spec.0

Just a thought on how long a ring should last.
An engagement ring is, hopefully, for the rest of your life. I've had mine for 42 years and had no problems whatsoever. My mum has had hers for over 60 years, again with no problems. Both of these rings have diamonds that are claw set. I know plenty of people who have had rings for this length of time with no problems.
I don't know how much the OP's ring cost but mine was the equivalent of twice the average weekly wage when it was purchased.
To have had this happen three times in two years amounts to poor quality in my opinion. I would be wanting a refund so that I could spend the money having the same design made somewhere that boasts better workmanship than Ernest Jones appears to do.0 -
Ernest Jones (EJ) are owned by the same company (Signet) that own H. Samuel (HS), and quite often EJ will sell exactly the same ring as HS but with a higher markup...it's utterly ridiculous. They have also been known to have some issues with quality control, and I'm not convinced the craftsmanship of the rings is always the best (some settings I've seen aren't suitable for containing the gem, hence problems with diamonds, etc, falling out).
If they're offering a replacement, look for another, similar style of ring which would match your wedding ring. If there's nothing, the only thing to do would be to demand a refund and have a look elsewhere. If all else fails, you can ask an independent jeweler to make up another ring for you. May be worth looking at the USA for diamond rings...cheaper, and larger selection.0 -
I'm pretty sure that Ernest Jones offer a design service.
I wouldn't have thought that diamonds should 'fall out' - none of my rings have had this problem (they're not from EJ though).
From what you've said, at the very least they should offer to custom-make a ring to fit your wedding ring.0 -

I would just like to say that its not Ernest Jones that make the rings but a manufacturer, prob the same of many that the likes of Goldsmiths/Beaverbrooks and other jewellers use.0 -
OP, I just wondered if your wedding ring that you had made to fit the engagement ring was from Ernest Jones too.
If it was, I'd definitely push for them to make an engagement ring to match your wedding ring.
Do let us know how you get on.0 -
I am having a bit of a problem with Ernest Jones myself at the moment. My now hubby also got my engagment ring from EJ, within the space of about 4 months a stone had come loose !! EJ did swap this without any problems. However my problem now is that I have had my ring for over 4 years and the same thing has happened again. I contacted EJ via e-mail last week and i was told I would receive a reply within 5 days ---- I havent!!!!! All I want to know is of they can help in any way!
If anyone has any advice I'd be really greatful!!0
