Questions about Dell warranty & support options

I was just wondering if it's possible to buy Dell support after the regular 1 year has expired. I am buying a laptop, and can't face adding 150 quid of warranty at the same time, but I wan't this laptop to last me and would rather it be covered than it break down after 366 days and cost me a fortune.

Would I be better off adding support, then calling them up and saying I want to cancel as it's too much and hoping they offer a discount.

or

Buy with the 1 year warranty and purchase an extended one later down the line

or neither.

  • Hi,
On the Dell website try searching for 'dell service solutions' then select 'cover it',
then select any of the packages for 'dimension or inspiron', select 'details' at the page bottom select 'next business day service is available to purchase seperately'.

The rates shown are considerably cheaper!
You will need to be ready for a fight as customer services try to make it difficult to get these rates, best to ask for Dell Customer Services/sales in Ireland found them to be more helpful.

wow, they are a lot cheaper huh?

    I ordered a Inspiron 630m, but it isn't actually listed in the options, the only ones that are are the Inspiron 510M, 9100, 8600c, 5160, 9200, 6000, 9300, 1200 and 2200.

Also, how do you actually buy that service? It says 'These service options are available to purchase at the same time you purchase your new Dell PC. Simply select the option most suitable to you.' but I didn't see them anywhere, should I call up and try to add it to my order?
  • Brodel,
You need to phone them (ask to be thro to customer services in Ireland not the call centres in India) and be very persistant as they don't seem to recognise their own rates!

  • Hi
When I bought my pc from Dell, I took out the 12mths collect and return, as I didn't want to pay for 3yrs warranty.
Last week Dell phoned me to ask if I wanted to extend my warranty (its now 3mths old) for the price of £116.00. I said no, but this was a lot cheaper than they originally wanted.

So it sometimes pays to wait, and see what they offer later.

    Hope this helps

Yea, that's what they did when my dad bought one a while back, I can't really afford 150quid on an extended warranty, but if you follow rich teas steps it turns out at 44 quid and that would be an awesome bargin. Only thing is that the 630m isn't mentioned on there, I expect because it's fairly new and should be on there but I assume they'll use the fact that it isn't to tell me they can't sell it to me. They are closed on the weekend so im gonna have to wait until monday to call.

Has anyone actually been successfull with this? I called twice, one person said it was only at the point of sale (I tried to explain that wasn't the case on the website and he got pretty rude and transferred me to the switchboard) and the second guy said the price was right but it was per year, and not for the entire 3 years.
  • we have the 3 year collect and return next business day warranty, and i have a problem with my dvd rewriteable drive (E drive) It isnt wpring basically !!!

I have gotten through to dell in India 3 times, each time very helpful, but each time they have me down loading different things etc, wiuthout me actually correcting the problem. today the guy had me take the side off my tower and was asking me to remove cables etc, which i couldnt do, I was too terrified incase i pulled the wrong thing out. plus everything seems very wedged in !! Is this was I paid for ? can i ask for someone to come out and check it, as there is obviously a problem and i cant do any more ..what are my rights ? ?

I've just bought one of the £299 Dell laptops from Grabbit with a 90 day warranty, 2 wks ago.

Just got a letter from Dell today offering a 3 year at home service warranty for £94.59 instead of the usual £135.13 it normally costs.

Anyone know if they are likely to drop the price further if you ignore their first offer?
