Faulty batteries destroyed my charger

I bought some batteries from a Hong Hong based ebay trader.
The first time I tried to charge them they blew up my charger.
The batteries were only 15GBP for 12 AA and 12 AAA. Cheap, until you add the cost of replacing my charger (about 45GBP! it was really good one).
I've contacetd the seller to give them a chance to sort it out. The problem is though, even if I get a full refund I'm still goin to end up out of pocket.
Do I just have to take this one on the chin?
