How long notice do you get from solicitors before your moving date, just wondered with having to give notice of cancellation to phone, sky, etc.
Thanks

Think you would normally agree an exchange date with your solicitor a week or 2 before it actually happens, then it's really up to you how quickly you complete-in my experience it is normally between 1 and 2 weeks after exchange. If you're taking services with you to new address just ring up the providers a week before and agree for them to be transferred over on the day you complete. Then cross your fingers that it actually happens, as I was without phone for 6 weeks owing to BT's complete incompetence! (They actually sorted everything out for the house at the opposite end of the road, at least I can laugh about it now)Scar tissue that I wish you saw, sarcastic mister know it all, close your eyes and I'll kiss you cause with the birds I'll share this lonely view.0

Ok thanks, it is a new house that we moving into so got to sort telephone out and have a tv aerial fitted it would drive hubby mad if he had to go with out tv for long lol. Did you start packing before exchanging contracts are wait untill then.0

all we knew when we had our offer accepted was "anything from 6 weeks to a couple of months". we didnt start packing! our buyers mortgage got held up a little but nothing major and we knew that things were going along ok but still didnt pack before exchange! we de-cluttered and got things read to pack though.
then last thurs we had a call saying we would be exchanging the next day and completing a week later! so I've been packing non stop ever since!!
we did have a problem with BT - called to move the line rental over and were told we needed to give two weeks notice which we didnt have but thats sorted now too. (grrr).
we called gas electricity and water on monday which was fine with all of them.
cant transfer our broadband til we have moved as no active bt line yet in the place we are going. that will be done when an engineer comes out on monday and then it will be 10 days for tiscali broadband.
if you're not sure you could always call your phone provider and sky to ask them what they need?
are you registered with move me? or helpiammoving? they have some helpful info. and tell you when to change things over and how to do it!
dont forget your tv licence for hubby!!
right, back to packing. Im perched on a box having a wagon wheel and a break lol! not long til friday yikes!
mercedes I hadnt realised you were moving to a new build house. exciting! any mortgage news?0 -

Hi
Yes got mortgage sorted very quickly with nationwide we cancelled application with abbey after waiting 6wks. I can understand how busy you will be at the mo but i bet you are excited. Yes we are moving in to a new build cant wait it was a big decision and will miss the house we are in at the mo but have allways liked new houses. We are hoping to have sky to put us a phone line up it just costs £30 installationand also have sky package where as bt charge £122. I will have a look at the websites that you mentioned. Good luck with your move.0 -
I wouldn't pack until you have exchanged, still loads that can go wrong (although I hope it doesn't) and I wouldn't want to tempt fate! Good Luck though.Scar tissue that I wish you saw, sarcastic mister know it all, close your eyes and I'll kiss you cause with the birds I'll share this lonely view.0

it is a new house that we moving into
Normally when you exchange contracts you set a date for completion when you move in. Your solicitor consults you about the completion date.
If you are buying a new house that is not yet completed the builder will want an exchange of contracts with a floating date so that when he has finished the hosue he gives your solicitrs notice and you have to complete in about 2 weeks.
As often with questions on this forum, the answer really is "Ask your solicitor" because he will know the circumstances of your case and be able to tell you what he knows about likely timescales.RICHARD WEBSTER
As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.0 -
I had 2 days between knowing it was definitely going ahead and having to move out. I wanted 2 weeks, but there were delays and in the end I said "Oh, just exchange and stick with the original planned completion date because I don't want to lose the buyers".
As part of the sales process you get to pick the dates, but so does everybody else in the chain, so you balance off their needs/wants with your own.0
