who will give cheap or free phone calls to ROI

my parents having been having a lot off problems with talk talk .The latest being charged international rate for calls to ROI .the latest bill had £5.93 & VAT
for calls to ROI that should have been free .
Is there an alternative to Talk Talk for these calls .
I dont want to use UTV as they will block 1899 &18185 .

  • I've used TalkTalk for almost a year and had free evening and weekend calls to Republic of Ireland during that period. I'm not at home during the day so I'm not 100% sure on what daytime call charges are.

Don't TalkTalk still do this £1000 guarantee that they'll be cheaper than BT? If I was in your shoes I'd be searching for old BT bills and comparing call prices to ROI !!
  • ginger nuts,

I will move this to the Telephones board to saee if you can get any further help over there.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Have a look on
    http://www.cheapcallguide.co.uk

    or more specifically:

    http://www.cheapcallguide.co.uk/destination/Ireland.aspx

This page lists cheap call access numbers for Ireland, with rates starting at 1p per minute :-)
  • Even better look on MSE's Call Checker, cheapest price per minute is 1/2p icon7.gif

However I would check out with TalkTalk if previously they had been included with their package.

the problem with Talk Talk is they have made a b@lls off the bill every month since October . First taking free evening calls off them ,then saying the free calls would be put back on ,but not puting them back on .I was told in december the free evening calls would be back on For a year from January 4th . On feb 16th I had to phone TT as they had charged international rate for calls .TT said they would give a £10 but the free calls would only be for 6 months . My parents are 78 & 81 and dont need bull from Talk Talk .
Hence the reason for looking elsewhere .

Not the first such report about TT I've read I'm afraid. A conspiracy theorist might say the whole CPW/TT/Tele 2/OneTel amalgamation was the cause.

I'd recommend getting them onto Primus and setting up a dialler for them so they don't even have to think about call routing.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

If you happen to have a o2 contract phone then there are numbers which you can use that come out of your inclusive minutes (o0870/0844) :)

Ok I better explain the situation .my parents live in Northern Ireland .BT ,Talk Talk and UTV all charge (or are suppose to charge ) calls to ROI at local /national rate .
BT charge 5.5 p per call ,talk talk should be 5p per call or free off peak . On my parents last bill TT charged international rate ,the same as from England .UTV will give free e&W calls but they will block 18185 & 1899 .They do use 18185 for calls to ROI and 1899 for uk calls during the day via there ranger phone from orchid .Primus will charge international rate at all times to ROI the same as from England .I dont really have any problems with my bill from Talk Talk but my parents do ,and at there age (78 & 81 ) they dont need the hassle .Hence the reason for the post .

I assume those 5p/5.5p prices are the evening/weekend charges. If so, we're talking about 0.5p per call difference between what BT charge and what TT (should) charge.

So, I'd get (or help) them to dump TT a.s.a.p. and move back to BT (and continue with 1899/18185 for weekday, daytime calls).

The Primus Saver Option 2 route would still be a possibility but dumping TT and going back to BT would solve the immediate problem with TT (OneTel/Tele2/CPW or whatever).

i was thinking a combination of BT
    ,primus ,18185 ,1899 .might be the only option but that leaves 4 bills & 2 oap's .
