Reviews please on microchip catflaps.

Hi.

I have done a quick search and found this thread which I have read http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=845281&highlight=pet+porte but its only concerned really with the Petporte flap. I am also looking at the Sureflap.

I have googled for reviews but I can't seem to choose one over the other so thought I'd post here and see which one you guys recommend.

We need one as other cats have started coming in and stealing Lilys food which a) leaves her hungry & b) is costing us more in cat food. (a is my main concern)

4.30am this morning we had to let out a huge tom that had got in, polished off her food but couldn't get out again because I had mistakenly turned the existing cat flap to in only!
If she sees another cat trying to get in she will stop it but I think sometimes they get in whilst she is sleeping (she sleeps quite heavily)
I could leave the existing flap on out only so that I have to let her & only her in once she has been out but she has always enjoyed being able to come and go as she pleases and I don't want to take that away from her.

I have also looked at autofeeders but that doesn't stop other cat coming in in the first place but I am bearing them in mind.

So to clarify I am looking for your experiences of both the Petporte and the Sureflap microchip cat flaps.

Thanks in advance.

ETA ~ I'm not interested in any type of catflap that needs a collar to be worn. Also are these flaps strong enough to stop a cat forcing their way in?

The only thing I have heard about the Sureflap is on another thread here, maybe the one you link to? Someone worked somewhere that sold both, I believe in a Vets? but the Sureflap get getting returned I think due to it breaking, wheras the PP one never did. I don't have experience of either but have heard nothing but good about the PP but the above about the Sureflap.
  • dont know much about magnectic cat flaps just if your cats are anything like mine and keep losing the collars it will cost you a fortune to keep replacing them

Pet Porte & Sureflap work on microchips tho, i'm thinking about getting the Porte one in the window for my Cat but I dunno if I have to buy it & then give it to a glazier to fit when the pane is made or they do the pane ready & then someone fits the flap?

I am not impressed so far with the current SureFlap. We have had to return 3 out of 5 so far. I am sure this is just down to new technology and will be ironed out in the near future but we are not advertising them widely yet. Not tried the Pet Porte. The general idea is great and I look forward to selling a fully functional version.

Didn't expect my thread to be resurrected :D

We decided to go with the Pet Porte in the end so have Lily booked in for chipping this week then will buy the flap after she is chipped.

Tigerlily. If you go here http://www.petporte.com/faq3.htm and see question 13 they say you can fit the pet porte into glass but need to speak to a glazier.
On googling I found someone said they were replacing their glass pane with clear perspex because it was a small pane they were fitting the flap into. I wouldn't want to do this to a whole french door pane though :D

I had to give the the glazier the measurements from the cat flap box so the pane (double glazed) arrived with the hole ready cut in it. He then fitted the cat flap after he had installed the window pane.

Pet porte are apparently about to bring out a version that fits the hole cut for a staywell flap. That should save people like me the expense of having another pane of glass prepared!

My vet stopped stocking sureflap because they had so many returned to them. Pet porte is apparently much stronger, so for the diference in price I'm putting a pet porte in when the staywell hole version is available.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • I recently bought a Sureflap because the Staywell Magnetic was being left open every time the cats came in and other cats were getting in.

I have the 2011 version (draught excluder, claw proof door etc) and it was £65 inc delivery. So far its been great, it fitted the hole in the door perfectly and even the screw holes were in the same place! Took 2 minutes in install and it learnt the cats straight away, luckily their chips hadn't migrated or it would have been a trip to the vets for rechipping.
The door lock is stronger than the Staywell, and better built. But then it should be as the Staywell was only £20.

What put me off the Pet Porte was the power lead that would have ran half the length of my kitchen. Don't know what they were thinking when they decided it needed mains power.
The Pet Porte also has a very large sensor sticking out on the outside of the door which I think is ugly, the Sureflap doesnt have this.

With the Sureflap also being slightly cheaper, I would not buy a Pet Porte unless you really need some of its extra functions like the light sensor to keep the cats in at night.
