Just got our electric bill in and they have charged me 16.88p per unit for my electric from 8th Dec to 27th Feb. Now i thought they decreased the price on 1st Jan to 15.06p so why have i been charged the old rate. Sending them an email now to see what they say

Any one else get charged this amount?

Yes - i got charged the higher rate too and phoned about this - the 1st Jan date is only applicable for the Keypad meters etc.
I got really annoyed with this especially since i only moved into the house on the 19th Dec and wasn't even there all over christmas

The date you get the new discounted rate dependson your billing cycle

You've got to laugh. In just over a year this rate has gone from 10.69p to 11.11p to 12.66p to 16.88p, taking an £82 bill to £130 (+58%).

NIE are now "delivering on the promise" to reduce prices (to 15.06p).

A bit of googling will tell you that gas/coal commodity prices peaked in the middle of last year and are now down to what they were 18 months ago.

What chance that rate will ever be 10.69p again?!

What they do is hike it in one fell swoop (12.66p to 16.88p in 3 months) then for the next two years tell us how great they are by dropping it in tiny increments.

To compound our powerlessness, Viridian Group (NIE's owners) don't even have publicly-listed shares should we want a slice of their action!

According to the flyer we got with our bill yesterday (which was about £35 higher than it normally is!):
"The new rates will be seen on quarterly bills issued in April, May and June for electricity used in the previous quarter (3 months)*"

"*depending on when the meter is read a few customers may not see the new rates until July."

Surely if the new rate was set on 1 January 2009 NIE should be backdating the price and adjusting bills accordingly?
